What is PGS?

1 min read

Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) is performed on day 5 or 6 of embryo culture. The main purpose of PGS is to analyze all 46 chromosomes to learn whether the embryo is aneuploid or euploid. Aneuploidy can cause implantation failure, miscarriage or chromosomal disorders like Turner or Down syndrome.

The screening is usually recommended for patients undergoing IVF programs with their own oocytes before the age of 35. Under these conditions, there is a fairly high risk of possible genetic abnormalities in the embryo. It also lets you know the gender of the embryo for family balancing.
