How is embryo fertilization performed?

2 min read

There are many misconceptions about fertilization and pregnancy. Many people don't understand how and where fertilization takes place or what happens as an embryo develops. Let us describe the process.

Fertilization happens when a sperm cell successfully meets an egg cell in the fallopian tube. This newly fertilized cell is called a zygote. From here, the zygote moves down the fallopian tube into the uterus.

Fertilization in in vitro fertilization (IVF) is usually performed by the ICSI method, an IVF procedure in which a single sperm cell is injected directly into the сytoplasm of an egg. This technique is used to make gametes ready to receive embryos that may be transferred to the woman's uterus. In this method, the acrosome reaction is skipped.

You need to know that when you find out you're pregnant, your doctor can count the gestational age of your pregnancy in weeks. Most babies are born at week 39 or 40.

Many people think that the gestational age begins with fertilization, with "week 1" being the week you got pregnant, but this isn't the case. Week 1 is actually retroactively counted from the first day of your last period. So, as we discuss in our FAQ 1 How to start IVF planning? the process of IVF treatment starts on "Day 1".
